Zac J was recently selected to represent the South West region in last weekend’s Cadet (under 17) Regional Fencing Championships, which brought together fencers from all weapons (Epee, Foil and Sabre) across Great Britain.
Zac was selected to be part of the four man Epee team that competed against the nine other regions in Great Britain. The men’s team got off to a slow start, losing their first match on the Saturday morning. The team did however manage to win seven of their next eight matches on Saturday and Sunday, and going into the last match, the South West team were placed 2nd behind London. Their last match was incredibly against the might of our nation’s capital, and the boys needed to win at least six of the nine fights to claim victory in the event. Zac claimed a decisive nail biting win in the final match, and the boys secured the 6-3 result they needed to win the event and become the Under 17 Regional Champions.
Next year, Zac will be aiming to move up from the current England Under 15 squad, and into the Under 17 Great Britain team. To make the team and represent Great Britain in four tournaments across Europe towards the end of 2019, Zac needs to be ranked in the top 15 by the end of September 2019. At present he is placed 10th in the rankings of the boys eligible to make the 2019 squad, so fingers crossed he has a good chance!
