Carnegie Book Awards

A Report from Our Students:

“On Tuesday 18th June, Coombe Dean School attended the Plymouth and Devon Carnegie Book Awards. The event was hosted by Tor Bridge High, and four students from Year 8 attended the event with support from Miss Davey and Mrs French. Ten different schools took part in the event, and everyone enjoyed it. Each school received a book from the Carnegie shortlist, and we were allocated the book ‘The Land of Neverendings’ by Kate Saunders.

All schools that participated had to prepare a presentation to perform on the day. In our presentation we wrote and pre-recorded a song that everyone enjoyed. Afterwards we read a book review, and shared our thoughts on the book. A toy penguin made a speech with its best friend (a toy bear) – we then introduced the most imagined bear in the world, the Sturvey (find the book in the library to discover more). Lastly we all voted for the presentation we thought was best.

The day was great fun overall and many books were being sold, and popular author of many books, including Buffalo Soldier,  Tanya Landman, was in attendance. She signed copies of her books and gave a talk about her life, cracked jokes and spoke about what inspires her to write her books. People could then proceed to ask her questions. All schools performed incredibly well. Finally, Tanya announced the overall winner, which were the hosts Tor Bridge High.

We enjoyed the trip to Tor Bridge High for the book awards because it was a room full of book lovers like us. We had the chance to share a book that we all enjoyed with everyone. As well as voting for the best presentation, we were also able to vote for our favourite book based on what we saw. The winning book as voted for by the students was ‘The Poet X’ by Elizabeth Acevedo, which was also this year’s Cilip Carnegie Medal Winner.”
