Duke of Edinburgh Award – 2019 Bronze Expeditions

At the weekend, 30 students completed their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition.

Students met up bright and early on Saturday at school in-order to travel via coach to our drop off point in Cornwall.

Five groups set off at five minute intervals along the coastal path of Whitsand Bay, loaded with orientation maps, compasses, sleeping bags, tents and enough food to feed an army.

They met up as a group again shortly for lunch at Rame Head before heading on to the villages of Kingsand and Cawsand. Our camp for the night was set up at Maker Hawkins Battery.

Students prepared their dinners using a Trangia, and were pleased to have a break from carrying their heavy bags. Having no access to their mobile phones for a weekend meant games such as UNO and ‘I can see what you can’t see’ were providing some of the entertainment.  After dinner, students were discussing with their Assessors what went well, and what their challenges could be for the next day. They also discussed how to ensure they would have a good experience.

On day two, the first group set off shortly after 7am after packing up and filling their rucksacks – now slightly lighter due to some food consumed the previous day – with some enjoying breakfast such as mash and beans!

Students walked via Mount Edgecumbe, and chose various routes to get to Millbrook. From here they headed back in land where the coach met us to return us all back to school for 5pm, and an early night.

Whilst students were assessed for their teamwork and leadership skills at the weekend, we are looking forward to receiving their final presentations about their journey’s.

Signing up sheets for DofE Silver are now available from Mr Willis.
