On Tuesday 11th December we took 48 of our most able Year 11 Mathematicians to the Maths Inspiration Lectures in Cardiff. The lectures are designed to motivate and inspire young people, with a focus on real life applications of mathematics. This session was based on probability, with Mathematicians Rob Eastaway and Ben Sparks demonstrating a series of games based on luck, strategy or a combination of both.
It was an early start for students as they met at school at 6am. They all had a fantastic day however, both at the lectures and whilst enjoying a spot of lunch and Christmas shopping in Cardiff afterwards.
There were several highlights of the day, including the first activity modelling extinction, where Charli M was the ‘last man standing’ and received a round of applause. Next up was Harvey H, who volunteered to go on stage and participate in one of the games of both luck and strategy. His maths skills served him well and he won a chocolate bar for his efforts. We all particularly enjoyed his victory dance! George W also volunteered to take part on stage for a chance to win £100. Sadly he did not win, but demonstrated his strategic thought process well.
A great day was had by all and we look forward to returning next year, with a show planned for Year 11 and 12.
