Munich welcomed us with the first days of Spring, at the end of last term, with a schedule packed from start to finish. This was made even more enjoyable by wall-to-wall sunshine.
Our group of Year 10 and 11 German GCSE students were able to experience Munich at its most beautiful, and the mountains still piled with snow despite the warm temperatures.
Visits to Marienplatz and the shops, the TV tower, BMW Welt, Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena and Therme Erding were followed by a day in the Bavarian Alps, a visit to the circus and the Deutsches Museum.
While waiting for our coach back to Plymouth from Heathrow Airport, the students compiled a list of their A-Z of their time in Bavaria.
A – Adelholzener – provider of a range of drinks!
B – BMW Welt – another private behind the scenes tour organised kindly by former Coombe Dean student Tristan Watts.
C – Clown – had us all in stitches at Cirkus Krone.
D – Deutsches Museum – lots to explore around science and nature
E – Eintrittskarte – lots of tickets for our various visits
F – Fussballstadion – Bayern Munich hosted us for an afternoon for a tour of the stadium
G – Geschäfte und Geschenke – always a hit with the students
H – Herr Kaes und Herr Watts – generous hosts of our tour behind the scenes of Bavaria’s most visited tourist attraction with over 3 million visitors per year
I – Implerstrasse – one of our changes on the U-Bahn
J – Janner in München – Tristan’s description of him finding himself living and working in Munich with his family having started out in Plymouth
K – die Kanone – this was a topnotch visit, excellent students, excellent experiences
L – Lebkuchenherz – a gift from Munich for our students
M – Marienplatz – everything came back to here on our use of the S-Bahn
N – Nudeln mit Soße – one of our evening meals at the hostel
O – Oberlandbahn (BOB) – the train that divides into three parts to take visitors to three different areas in the mountains before coming back together to return to Munich.
P – Paulanertreffpunkt – time for Currywurst mit Pommes prior to our guided tour of the Allianz Arena
Q – Qual der Wahl – we really were spoilt for choice
R – richtig! – it’s wonderful to see and hear learning taking place in this unique learning environment
S – S-Bahn – took us all over Munich comfortably and of course, punctually!
T – Therme Erding – slides and heated pools a-plenty
U – U-Bahn – Standing room only – we weren’t the only visitors in this Millionenstadt
V – Vokabeltest mit Frau K-L – lots of opportunities taken to practise speaking, especially for those taking their exams in a few weeks!
W – Wanderung – interrupted by snowballs, our walk up the mountain to our lunch of Schnitzel mit Pommes was idyllic
