Science and Technology Showcase at the University of Plymouth

We were fortunate enough recently to be able to take a group of students from Years 10-13 to the University of Plymouth’s Science and Technology Showcase.

This event is for students who are considering Higher Education opportunities within these areas and discovering where a Science and Technology degree can take them.  Students were given a motivating talk in the Lecture Theatre by Professor Spicer from the faculty of Science and Engineering and then taken to the Rolle Marquee to visit the many varied and interactive stands.   Some examples of the types of opportunities were:

  • In the Engineering section students were able to experience a mobile wave simulator. They were able to find out how we can model wave conditions to ensure people stay safe at sea, and also to learn more about cyber security.
  • Within the Biological Sciences section, students were able to get ‘hands on’ with insects from Dartmoor zoo. They learned about Gluten extraction, and could even make their own seaweed jelly!
  • Finally, in the Life Sciences section, the mad Professors were on-hand to conduct fun experiments. Also, the Geographers were using Google Earth virtual reality to allow students to explore anywhere in the world.

A big thank you to all the staff at Plymouth University for helping to inspire our students and, of course, our students for conducting themselves with maturity throughout their visit!
