Team Maths Challenge

On Monday 5th March, Coombe Dean hosted the Regional Final of the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Team Maths Challenge.  The Team Maths Challenge is a competition which gives teams of four students, from Years 8 and 9, the opportunity to tackle a variety of engaging mathematical activities, whilst developing teamwork and communication skills.

Established in 1996, The UKMT is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in Mathematics. The UKMT organises national mathematics competitions, and other mathematical enrichment activities, for 11 to 18 year old UK school students.

This heat of the Regional Final was attended by 17 schools from the South West, and there was a fantastic atmosphere in the hall.  The students took part in four rounds:

Group Round

Teams worked to solve ten questions of varying type and difficulty in the time allowed. Each team decided their own strategy: whether to work in pairs, individually or as a team.

Crossnumber

Similar to a crossword, but with numerical answers. Teams work in pairs; one pair had the across clues and the other pair has the down clues. The pairs work independently to complete the grid using logic and deduction.

Shuttle

Teams competed against the clock to correctly answer a series of four questions. Each team was divided into Pair A (given Questions 1 and 3) and Pair B (given Questions 2 and 4). Question 1 could be solved independently of the others, but the answer to each subsequent question was dependent on the previous answer.

Relay

Teams were split off into pairs, with pairs taking it in turns to solve problems. These rounds involved lots of movement, as well as mathematics – a race against the clock, with lots of lively activity and excitement.

All of the students who participated seemed to really enjoy the day, and worked very hard – challenging themselves to complete the mathematical problems in a competitive and fast-paced environment.  The winners, Launceston College, qualified for the National Final in London.

The Coombe Dean team did fantastically well, and were in 3rd place after the first two rounds!  Everyone agreed that the final two rounds were incredibly challenging, but Coombe Dean finished in a very respectable 6th place, and the students should feel very proud of what they have achieved.

Huge congratulations to Max P, Ellie D, Jessica H and Ruby M!
