On Tuesday 15th October we welcomed 44 students from our local primary schools; Sherford Vale, Goosewell, Wembury, Hooe, Oreston and Elburton to participate in the UKMT Primary Team Maths Challenge. Once again Mrs Spencer coordinated the Plymouth University Maths ITT students to plan and run the competition, which they did extremely successfully. Many thanks to them for all of their hard work!
The primary students competed in groups of four to work through seven extremely challenging mathematical rounds. Their problem solving skills were tested along with their ability to work collaboratively and logically. The rounds included ‘Make a Number’, where students had to complete a number of tricky ‘Count Down’ style questions, and ‘Relay’, involving students answering questions in pairs, then sprinting across the hall to submit their answers.
The Year 5 and 6’s were wonderful ambassadors for their schools and we were incredibly impressed by their enthusiastic approach and mathematical ability.
The students all performed incredibly well, with every team scoring well over 200 points, but the top 3 places were as follows:
Elburton B – 289 points
Hannah D, Emma S, Alvaro A and Caitlin P
Hooe A – 273 points
Jake R, Oliver E, Maximus B and Sam F
Hooe B – 272 points
Rosie W, Holly K, Lauren T and Merryn L
Special congratulations to these teams and well done to all who took part! We look forward to hosting this event again next year.
