On Thursday 7th March, Coombe Dean hosted the Regional Final of the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Team Maths Challenge. The Team Maths Challenge is a competition which give team of four students, from Years 8 and 9, the opportunity to tackle a variety of engaging mathematical activities whilst developing teamwork and communication skills.
Established in 1996, The UKMT is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in Mathematics. The UKMT organises national Mathematics competitions, and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11 to 18 year old UK school students.
This heat of the Regional Final was attended by 12 schools from the South West. The students were incredibly motivated throughout the day, and the atmosphere in the hall was fantastic. The teams took part in four rounds:
Teams work to solve 10 questions of varying type and difficulty in the time allowed. Each team must decide their own strategy; whether to work in pairs, individually or as a team.
Similar to a crossword but with numerical answers. Teams work in pairs; one pair has the across clues and the other pair has the down clues. The pairs work independently to complete the grid, using logic and deduction.
Teams compete against the clock to correctly answer a series of four questions. Each team is divided into Pair A (given Questions 1 and 3) and Pair B (given Questions 2 and 4). Question 1 can be solved independently of the others, but the answer to each subsequent question is dependent on the previous answer.
Teams split off into pairs, with pairs taking it in turns to solve problems. This round involves lots of movement, as well as Mathematics; a race against the clock with lots of lively activity and excitement.
All of the students who participated seemed to really enjoy the day, and worked very hard – challenging themselves to complete the mathematical problems in a competitive and fast-paced environment. The winners, The Park Community School from Barnstaple, qualified for the National Final in London.
The Coombe Dean team demonstrated great focus and determination and should be very proud of their efforts. Huge congratulations to Leo M, Ollie R, Lauren C and Phoebe S, who thoroughly enjoyed the event!
