Our Year 7 team took their latest step in their Coombe Dean footballing careers at Plymstock for their round of fixtures. A promising group of players will achieve great things by the time they leave school, and that’s mainly down to the consistent high standards they set themselves in terms of their performance and attitude to the game.
Our first game against Plymstock saw us take a deserving lead after a fast start, when good play from Alfie M down the left-hand side found prolific front-man, Gonzalo A, in the channel – who glided past a defender and lashed the ball into the bottom corner. At times when the boys calmed down and put their foot on the ball, it was a joy to stand back and watch the football they were playing showing that their hard work at training for both school and club was paying off. Unfortunately, we let slip of the one goal advantage just before half time, but there were certainly many positives to take from our performance. Joe P was outstanding in the second half when Plymstock created wave after wave of attacks, but one shot proved too many when their striker beat him at his near post from close range.
A host of changes were made in our second game against Lipson to ensure that all 12 players were given their opportunity on this stage to showcase their skills, and prove why they should be part of the team. A dominant display in the first half saw Harley C and Bartosz W run the midfield from start to finish, presenting Gonzalo and Drew C many chances in the final third. One outstanding piece of play saw Coombe Dean take a throw-in from their own half, and the boys played one touch football all the way up the pitch and created a chance. This was followed by a round of applause from the other members of staff, and supporting parents. Coombe Dean finally got what they deserved when Harley C latched onto a loose ball on the edge of box and duly dispatched it into the back of the net. This showed some real resilience by Harley who had previously been unlucky with a chance.
The second half started how the first half finished, with Louie N on debut adding a second to the score line. This followed more great work from Alfie M on the left-hand side, whose footwork at times was too much for the Lipson defence. Alfie’s high level of performance was rewarded with a third goal quickly after, and despite a consolation from Lipson (making it 3-1), it was a fantastic win for Coombe Dean!
Our third and final game of the evening was a frustrating affair against All Saints. Much like the previous two fixtures, Coombe Dean started on the front foot and carved out chance-after-chance, but were unable to beat an inspired All Saints goalkeeper. Freddie H and Kitso T were strong at the back, allowing the attacking players to sustain wave after wave of attacks. In the dying seconds of the game, Bartosz W found space in the box at a corner, but unfortunately could not guide his bullet header on target and the game finished 0-0. Overall, a promising start to their central venue, and lots to work on over the next couple of weeks.
Massive well done to Joe P, Marcel D, Kitso T, Charlie E, Freddie H, Clark D, Harley C, Bryar R, Gonzalo A, Louie N, Bartosz W & Alfie M!
