The Year 8 team started their footballing journeys at Plymstock this week at the Plymouth Central Venue, and had the opportunity to play in competitive matches against other schools in the area.
The boys had been working fantastically in training all year and were eager to prove themselves on the pitch. Our first match against Stoke Damarel was a close game, but the boys looked incredibly confident on the ball – passing and moving to support each other. We had created some great opportunities, but were just lacking that final bit of composure in front of the goal. We eventually lost 2-0, but the game that the boys played was very promising indeed – something that should be taken into the final two matches.
We rotated the team for the second match against Eggbuckland, and all credit to the boys, some of them were asked to play in a position unfamiliar to them. They certainly rose to the challenge, and gave their team mates everything they could. Although the match finished 3-0 to Eggbuckland, the boys’ attitude was first class. The first match was about how good they were with the ball and their spatial awareness, whereas this game was much more of a physical battle – they had to work really hard to regain possession.
The best was saved to last though, where we played DHSB and came out with a 2-0 victory! Two goals from Oli S in either half gave the Coombe Dean boys a much deserved win after their fantastic effort and performance all evening. What was particularly nice to see was the togetherness and teamwork the boys showed, not only to each other but to their opposition as well. One of the highlights for me was seeing the team celebrate their first goals together as I felt it was a just reward for all of their hard work and commitment in training.
Promising signs indeed from a talented bunch of footballers who will be competing in the Plymouth, Devon and National Cup competitions next year.
Well done to; Nico T, Oli S, Ethan H, Fin F, Luca S, Ollie W, Lennie SH, Noah J, Fabio A and David I.
