Post-18 Pathways (Next Steps)

Post-18 Pathways

Each year, around 60% of our Year 13 students apply to university and successfully secure a place.
Many others go on to apprenticeships or degree apprenticeships after completing their A levels.

We encourage all students to keep their options open and explore as many pathways as possible.
This page provides a brief overview of the routes available after Post-16 study.

For more information, please contact Ms Dunstan on the email address below. Ms Dunstan is the Deputy Head of Post-16, with specific oversight of post-18 pathway support.

University

The UCAS website is the main platform for university applications.
Some specialist institutions, such as art or music colleges, may request direct applications, but this is rare.

We deliver a structured programme of UCAS support throughout Years 12 and 13, through both the Post-16 tutor programme and Critical Thinking lessons in Term 6.

All students are encouraged to:

  • Register with UCAS and begin an application, even if unsure about their chosen pathway

  • Write a 4,000-character personal statement – from 2026, this will be written in three sections

  • Present themselves as interested and interesting to stand out to universities

Some courses may also require:

  • Additional admissions tests

  • A portfolio submission

  • An interview

Students can apply for up to five courses, but must check that they meet the specific entry criteria for each one.
The UCAS deadline for most courses is mid-January of Year 13.

Early Applications

Applications for Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry must be submitted earlier.
Students interested in these courses should inform the Post-16 Team as soon as possible to access extra support.

Contextual Offers

Some universities make contextual offers, taking into account individual circumstances such as background or access challenges.
Alternative or reduced-grade offers may be available through access schemes.
Eligibility criteria vary, so please check individual university websites for details.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship opportunities typically appear from February or March each year.

We advertise current vacancies on the student noticeboard and offer a wide range of support in school, including:

  • Specialist careers interviews

  • Interview preparation and practice

  • Guidance on writing applications

This support is delivered through the Post-16 tutor programme as part of the school’s careers curriculum.

Most apprenticeship vacancies are listed on the National Apprenticeship Service website, although some providers advertise independently.
Students are encouraged to set aside time each week to search for new opportunities, as apprenticeship providers do not follow the same strict deadlines as university applications.
